Capacity building for CO2 mitigation from international aviation in Africa and the Caribbean

EU-CORSIA Africa and Caribbean project in South Africa! For the whole week (8-12 May 2023) the EU-CORSIA Africa and Caribbean project is in Johannesburg, South Africa for a large-scale event in strict cooperation with South African CAA and AFCAC. On the 8 and 9 of May two initial training sessions in French and in English on the CORSIA programme have been delivered in strict coordination with AFCAC to initiate some African countries to the CORSIA scheme and logic. The countries invited (Togo, Niger, Mauritania, Central African Republic, Ghana, Malawi, Eswatini, Cabo Verde, Lesotho, Sao Tome and Principe) have been for the first time in contact with the project scope and add up to the beneficiaries already included in the workplan. These initial training sessions have been followed from the 10th until tomorrow, 12th of May, by a regional workshop on CORSIA IMPLEMENTATION AFTER ICAO 41st GENERAL ASSEMBLY to which a large audience involving the Civil Aviation Authorities, Ministry of Environment, Verification Bodies, National Accreditation Bodies and Airline Operators is taking part. 200 participants from 33 different countries are participating in the workshop that is taking place in a hybrid mode in 2 languages. Ms Poppy Khoza, Chief Executive Officer - South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), opened the activity, followed by the European Union Delegation to South Africa, represented by the Head of cooperation -Mr Theodorus Kaspers and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Air Transport Director, represented by Mr Frankline Omondi (on behalf of Ms Angeline Simana). EASA was represented by International Cooperation America and Africa – Ms Carla Iorio, and by the EU-CORSIA Africa and Caribbean project manager – Ms Eleonora Italia.
